Sion Hughes

Drawing / Painting / Jewellery Design

Sion is a well known and highly regarded practice based artist and designer. He is also an experienced higher education professional and academic with extensive engagement within international domains. As well as his current role with UCLan, Sion has also held senior posts at the University of Wales (Cardiff UK), Sunway University (KL Malaysia), Glyndwr University  (UK), and University of the Creative Arts (UK). 

 

As a practising artist and designer, Sion has exhibited widely at major galleries in London and Cardiff, including Goldsmiths Hall (1979 & 1983) and the National Museum of Wales (1984), and his work features in private collections both in the UK as well as internationally. 

 

Sion has a first degree from Central St Martins College of Art & Design London UK (1979), and a post-graduate MA from the Royal College of Art London UK (1983). He has a PGCE from Brunel University London UK (1980) and is a Fellow of the HEA (2004). 

 

Sion has been an influential figure in shaping Art and Design education policy for higher education in the UK over the past two decades. He played a prominent role on the Arts Council of Wales as a board member (1994-2006), also University of Wales Validation Board (2004-2012) and Higher Education Academy Management Board (2002-2006). He has served as an external examiner, moderator and consultant for some of the world’s premier international  Design Schools, including Domus Academy, Milan, Accademia Italiana, Florence & Rome, and the Prince’s School, London. 

 

He has extensive experience of working successfully and establishing partnerships in China, and has led successful projects for the University of Wales with Tsinghua University, with the CSCSE for Renmin University and for Glyndwr University with Shenzhen University. 

 

Sion was awarded a Personal Chair from the University of Wales UK (2011) and is a Professor (Emeritus) of that university.
